Vietcong won't run in Vista unless I disable sounds?
Sky999
I know there are multiple fixes that people have linked to previous questions like this, such as this link...

http://www.vietcong.info/portal/forum/viewthread.php?thread_id=333&pid=4108

...but that is for Windows 7.

Trust me, I've tried doing it anyway, and I've downloaded multiple different links for Realteck chips, but a Realtek soundchip never shows in my sound properties anyway.

I don't know why the game won't work unless I disable sounds, I installed it a few months ago and it worked perfectly, now I reinstall it and suddenly it won't load unless I disable sounds.

I just want to say again that this is for VISTA, not Windows 7 as so many of the solutions seem to be aimed at.

Be sure to install and play VC as administrator.

Check what kind of soundchip you have..."sisoft sandra" might help you.

W7 and Vista are nearly the same beside the UAC Wink

I've tried running it as adminitrator, I've also tried running it in various compatability modes, I've had no luck with either. So far the only thing that works is to disable sounds, which obviously can hardly be classed as a 'fix'.

I'm not great with technical aspects of PCs, but this is what the Dell XPS 420 specs say about the sound...

Integrated
Intel® 7.1 channel High Definition Audio

Optional
Sound Blaster® Audigy® software (relies on CPU)
Sound Blaster® X-FiTM ExtremeMusic4

Is that helpful to find out the chip?

Sky999:

I searched the THM forums, my clan's site, and found three posts that might help you.
============

Here is a fix, I think for Win7 ... that might help you.
We installed VC Starter and it would not work, until I found this solution. It worked and I have shared it with many others and it worked for them.

- start Vietcong as Admin
- deactivate Sound / update your Sound-Driver
- "AMD-Optimizer", if you use AMD Dual Core Processor

Remember to start as your PC admin

And here is another possible fix
Do you have a Realtek sound card? I found a solution to a crash problem for someone who had a Realtek sound card.

If you have Realtek Sound card, try to disable Front panel jack detection in Realtek HD Audio Manager.

And I have to ask: Have you updated your sound drivers?

Not really. Go to this site: http://www.sisoft...=en&a= and download the "lite" Version. This tool will find the correct soundchip of your PC. Once you found the chip (manufacturer) you will also find the correct drivers.

I think that VCStarter v1.4 solves this problem. Download VCStarter here: http://www.vietco...php?id=558 and try to check "Fix crashes due to sound problems (missing input or output device)" in VCStarter Configurator.

Alright, I downloaded that, but the only thing I can find regarding a chipset is this.

...but I also thought I'd show what I'm seeing in the Sound settings...I still can't see anything relating to a sound chip though.

Am I looking in the wrong place?

I've checked and they all say they are uptodate.

Check the audio and chipset drivers at the DELL download center:

I'll try downloading the chip set, thanks for the link.

I got it working, my VC starter wasn't the right one apparently, so thank you Nosek for the link!
